Plans approved for a new ALDI store in Slaithwaite

29 November 2013

Plans for a new ALDI store on a former mill site in Slaithwaite, near Huddersfield, have been approved.

Members of Kirklees Council’s planning committee gave the go ahead to the development after deferring a decision at an earlier meeting in October so further clarification could be given on three issues around the development.

The development team were asked to look at design, HGV movements and car park management before a final decision could be made by councillors.

Revised designs were put before members and a car park management plan has been agreed  - ensuring that customers using the other shops and services in the town can benefit from the additional car parking.

HGV moments were also further tested to provide the re-assurance that councillors had sought.
And after satisfying all the key issues the development plans were approved at a special meeting held at Huddersfield Town Hall on Friday November 29th.

Work can start on the brand new store early in 2014, transforming the rundown former Colne Mill off Britannia Road in Slaithwaite, helping to retain trade in the area and creating around 30 new jobs.

The new 12,100 sq ft sales area store is designed in natural stone and corten steel.  As well as a new store with good links to the other shops and facilities in Slaithwaite the development, being brought forward by Barnsley based Dransfield Properties Ltd, will also deliver a new 90 space car park and highway improvements.

The plans have been supported by a number of local business owners, including Janet Broscombe from Lily of the Valley Florists and Julie Earnshaw, who owns a hairdressing salon in the town.  Both spoke in favour of the application at the planning meeting.

Head of Communications at Dransfield Properties, Amanda Holmes, said: “We have looked closely at the aspects of the scheme the councillors asked us to further clarify at the last meeting and are delighted that the application was approved.

“Our company has a track record in exactly this kind of development and we are confident this will retain trade in the town and benefit the wider business community.

We have worked with ALDI stores for many years since our company was first founded more than 20 years ago and we look forward to starting work on this new development with the company next year.”
