Marathon Man Steve Picked to Take Part in Olympic Torch Relay
22 March 2012
Dransfield Properties’ very own marathon man Steve Stead has been selected to be a torchbearer when the Olympic torch comes through South Yorkshire this June, on its route across Britain ahead of this summer's games.
Steve, who works as the chief accountant at the Barnsley based retail property developers, is one of the hundreds of people who have been selected to carry the torch as it is carried on its historic journey through Yorkshire.
Dad of three Steve, who is from Penistone, is a keen marathon runner and has fundraised for The Stroke Association by taking part in the London Marathon in previous years - this May he's also taking part in the Sheffield half marathon.
Steve is one of the 8,000 runners who have been chosen to carry the torch along its 8,000 mile journey around Britain which will start in May. It will pass within ten miles of 95 per cent of the UK population.
Steve will complete his historic leg of the torch’s journey in Barnsley after Dransfield Properties Ltd was given the opportunity through the company’s banking partner Lloyds to nominate someone to be put forward to be a torchbearer.
Staff at Dransfields had their own internal poll to select a representative for the nomination process and Steve’s reputation as the company’s very own marathon man made him the obvious choice.
Steve said: “I feel incredibly honoured to be chosen to be one of the torchbearers and still can’t really believe it. To be part of the Olympics in this way and represent my area is just fantastic – and a little nerve racking, but I am looking forward to it.”
Mark Dransfield, Managing Director at Dransfield Properties Ltd said: “It’s a great honour for our company and we are particularly delighted to be sharing this special moment with Steve during our company’s 20th anniversary which we are celebrating this year.
“We will be organising all the staff to cheer Steve along his way and it’s a great opportunity for us all to really feel part of the Olympics this summer.”
