A public exhibition of the regeneration plans for Willenhall is being held on Wednesday, 30 May at Willenhall Youth and Community Foundation, Gomer Street, 11.00 am to 6.00 pm.

Regeneration specialists Dransfield Properties and Gallagher Developments are proposing a £30 million redevelopment of the former Assa Abloy site which will deliver a mixed use residential and retail scheme, and create up to 400 jobs

At the exhibition, layout plans and artists impressions will be displayed and the developers and architects will be on hand to explain the scheme and listen to the views of the local community.

The plans include a 75,000 sq ft foodstore with a 500 space town centre car park, and housing which will incorporate a mixture of family homes and apartments.  A new link road between Wood Street and Walsall Street is also proposed which will ease traffic flows through the town, and improve pedestrian links to the existing town centre.

The scheme is designed to recapture trade and increase the vitality of the area.  Willenhall is the only town in the Black Country which lacks a major supermarket and research shows that less than 30 per cent of convenience spending is retained in the catchment.  However, with the development of a foodstore of this size, independent consultants predict that trade retention will increase to more than 70 per cent.

Andrew Malley, Retail Property Director at Dransfield Properties, said: “Community involvement is at the heart of every development we do, and I hope members of the public will be able to attend the exhibition and tell us first hand what they think about the proposals.  These views will then be taken into consideration when finalising the details of the regeneration scheme .”
