Plans unveiled for Hyde retail and leisure hub, creating 35 new jobs

27 October 2025

A new retail and leisure development could soon be coming to the southern edge of Hyde, as award winning development company Dransfield Properties has submitted plans to transform a vacant former car dealership site into a modern commercial hub.

The proposed scheme will breathe new life into the 0.42-hectare brownfield site at the junction of Stockport Road and Dowson Road, between Hyde and Bredbury.

The site was previously home to an Audi dealership, which closed in March 2025 as part of a wider network rationalisation. Despite extensive marketing, no new motor trade occupier was secured.

Now, Dransfield Properties plans to repurpose and refurbish the existing building—avoiding demolition—to deliver two new commercial units, bringing a small-format supermarket (approx. 395 sq m / 4,250 sq ft) and a gym with mezzanine space (approx. 746 sq m / 8,025 sq ft)

In total, the redeveloped site will offer over 12,000 sq ft of commercial space, alongside 72 parking spaces, EV charging bays, a car wash, parcel lockers, and enhanced landscaping —particularly along Apethorn Lane.

The project is expected to create 30–35 permanent jobs, including retail assistants, management roles, fitness instructors, and support staff—exceeding the 20 jobs lost when the dealership closed. The construction phase will also support local contractors and supply chain businesses.

“This is an exciting opportunity to bring a disused site back into active use and provide local services and jobs for the community,” said James Shepherd, Managing Director at Dransfield Properties. “Our company’s focus is on quality developments that complement their surroundings, deliver long-term value, and are designed with sustainability at their heart.”

Sheffield based Dransfield Properties Ltd was founded in 1992 and specialises in retail-led regeneration schemes, particularly in market towns and district centres across the UK. The company is headquartered at Fox Valley in north Sheffield, where it actively manages a nationwide portfolio of mixed-use developments.

Notable projects include the award-winning Marshall’s Yard in Gainsborough—set to mark its 20th anniversary in 2027—as well as thriving retail centres in Morpeth, Selby, and Stroud.

In addition to major town centre projects, the company also delivers standalone retail, leisure, and residential schemes.

Dransfield Properties is known for its strong community ethos and a proven track record of working in partnership with local councils, community groups, and stakeholders to create well-managed, sustainable places that meet local needs.

The Hyde planning application has been submitted to the planning authority, Tameside Metropolitan District Council.
