Planners to decide on new ALDI store for Slaithwaite

Planners to decide on new ALDI store for Slaithwaite
14 October 2013
Members of Kirklees Council’s planning committee are due to discuss the plans for a new Aldi Store in Slaithwaite when they meet next week.
Planning officers have recommended the development, being brought forward by Barnsley based Dransfield Properties, be approved – delivering a new 12,100 sq ft Aldi store which is designed in natural stone and corten steel.
If approved on Thursday October 17th the development off Britannia Road in Slaithwaite, near Huddersfield, will transform a rundown former mill site, currently owned by Spectrum Yarns, and help to retain trade in the area.
As well as delivering a new town centre foodstore and car park to serve the local catchment the new Aldi store will also create and secure jobs in the area.
Businesses in the area have already submitted petitions to Kirklees Council in support of the new Aldi store - more than 700 people have signed the petition organised by several businesses in Slaithwaite all keen to see the new development plans come to fruition.
Local residents and businesses have also submitted more than 200 letters of support for the development plans. J
Janet Broscombe, from Lily of the Valley Florists in Slaithwaite is one of the traders in the town who has held a petition in her store, she says the new Aldi will encourage people to stay in Slaithwaite to do their food shopping rather than driving to nearby towns such as Meltham.
Andrew Malley, retail property director at Dransfield Properties, said the company had been heartened by the support from local businesses and residents in Slaithwaite for the new development plans.
He added: “Aldi is a quality, limited range retailer and the new store will complement the existing businesses in the town, encouraging people to shop in Slaithwaite rather than driving out of the area.
“Slaithwaite has some great local retailers and we have been overwhelmed by the positive response we’ve had from so many who see the new store as a positive benefit to the town and to their own businesses.
“The new Aldi will support the vitality of the town and cut down on the flow of shoppers driving out of the area to other nearby towns. We are confident that our plans represent an attractive and fully compliant use on the site which will not only make a significant difference in reversing the trend of shoppers leaving the area; it will also regenerate a rundown site which has been derelict for some years now.”
If the application is successful building work could start within six weeks, with the new store opening in the middle of 2014.
