Internationally renowned sculptor Robert Erskine visited youngsters at Mill Hill Primary school on Thursday to give them an exclusive preview of the sculpture due to sit at the heart of Alexandra Park, the latest development by Dransfield Properties, at Scotia Road, Tunstall.

The ‘Tunstall Shard’ brings together Tunstall’s industrial earthenware and rich roman metal heritage.

It’s design has been created to acknowledge the generations of people in Tunstall, whose occupations and skill helped to create the town’s fine reputation for outstanding quality.

To mark this exciting addition to the town, Mill Hill primary school pupils are now embarking on a project to produce time capsules which are to be buried at the side of the sculpture at a special unveiling ceremony later this year. The capsules are intended to capture present day life in Tunstall until they are discovered in centuries to come.

Alexandra Park, situated on the former Wedgewood pottery site, has recently seen the opening of Carphone Warehouse and will shortly be home to a new JJB store and health & fitness centre. This is the latest phase of ongoing multi million pound investments from Dransfield Properties since the construction of Jasper Square which brought national retailers Matalan, Argos and Next to the town.

Jackie Helliwell, spokesperson for Dransfield Properties said, “We are very excited about the sculpture and are looking forward to seeing the amazing structure on display for all to see. We are also delighted to be working with the children at Mill Hill Primary school in celebrating what will become an historic occasion and one which I think they will be proud to have been a part of.”
