Work To Start On Extension To Jasper Square Development

3 October 2007

Construction on the next phase of the Jasper Square development in Tunstall is scheduled to start before the end of October. It will deliver a £45,000 sq ft JJB retail, health and fitness centre, Carphone Warehouse and a 1000 sq ft retail unit.

A phased approach has been adopted by developers, Dransfield Properties Ltd, for the extension to Jasper Square which will eventually include Stoke Primary Care Trust facilities as well as 240 car parking spaces.

“This is another milestone for the company and marks a significant step in the on-going regeneration of Tunstall. The success of Jasper Square is widely acknowledged and we are confident that the next phase will enjoy similar success”, said Andrew Malley, retail property director at Dransfield’s.

“And we are especially pleased that this phase will provide an industry leading, state-of-the-art JJB health club. This will offer the highest quality health and fitness facility to local reasons and create even more reasons to visit Tunstall town centre”, he added.

In order to help ease local traffic congestion, this first phase of further development will also deliver high improvement works, including the Boulevard Junction off Scotia Road. The widening of the footpath along Butterfield Place as well as the construction of a covered walkway leading into Jasper Square will help to improve pedestrian linkages and access.

Public realm will also be a major feature of this phase with the Greenway area receiving a complete upgrade and a public feature. It is expected that this phase will take approximately 50 weeks to complete.

Another feature of the construction on this site, formerly the Alexandra Pottery, will be to expose a pottery kiln that is currently too deep for archaeologists to assess. Once exposed, however, it will be carefully examined by a team from Stoke on Trent City Council’s Archaeology Unit. A report from the unit is expected in November.
