Work progressing well at Fox Valley as highway improvements get underway

24 May 2014

Work starts this week on the new roundabout which is being built as part of the Fox Valley development in Stocksbridge, north Sheffield.

The roundabout is being built on the A616 Stocksbridge bypass to upgrade the current access to the Tata steelworks to accommodate the new £42 million retail, office and housing development being delivered in the town by Dransfield Properties Ltd.

Road users and local residents are being advised by the Highways Agency that from Monday 19 May just over half a mile of the A616 will be affected by the works.

A reduced speed limit of 30 mph and the use of narrow lanes will be in force for the 16 weeks of the project’s duration.

All lanes will remain open during peak hours but temporary traffic signals will be used when necessary on the A616 between 09.30 and 15.30 each day.

Overnight, there will be a series of closures of the westbound lane on the A616 affecting 2.5 miles of road in order to install different traffic management phases. During the closures clearly signed diversion routes will be in place with traffic being diverted along the A6102 Wortley Road and B6088 Manchester Road.

Towards the end of the work programme, resurfacing will take place overnight between 8pm and 6am, with traffic management temporarily in place. The work is being carried out by CR Reynolds.

Elsewhere on the Fox Valley site work is progressing well and the steelwork is due to be erected at the beginning of June on the new Tata steel warehouse.

The main contractors Henry Boot Construction have also started ground preparation work on the Fox Valley housing site in the last few weeks.

The break out of the areas of hard standing on the main retail site are also ongoing and work is underway on the refurbishment of the former steelworks canteen building which makes up part of the overall project.

Work is also due to start this month on the demolition of a building on Manchester Road in Stocksbridge which will allow for a better access into the new Fox Valley development from the town centre.

Abacus Independent Financial Advisers relocated from their premises at 452 Manchester Road earlier in the year.

The scaffolding will start to go up this week to herald the start of the demolition of the building which will be undertaken throughout June. Once the building has been demolished a new stone wall will be built and works to the roof completed, these external works should be finished by mid-August.

Head of Communications at Dransfield Properties Amanda Holmes said: “It’s great to see work progressing so well on all parts of the site at this early stage in the project.

“Much of the work so far is taking place on areas which are not immediately visible. However people should really start to see things happening now with the start of the works to create the new roundabout on the A616 Stocksbridge bypass and in the town centre on the former Abacus building.”

The Fox Valley development is being built on a 28 acre site with direct access off the A616 Sheffield to Manchester Road, the first phase of work is to relocate the Tata steel stockyard to the new warehouse facility.

Dransfield Properties has received an investment of £8,111,040 from the Yorkshire and Humber ERDF Programme 2007- 2013, which is managed by the Department for Communities and Local Government to bring forward the Fox Valley project.
