New Morrisons store officially opened in Morpeth

22 July 2013

Morpeth's new Morrisons store has opened for business bringing new jobs and more long stay parking in the North East town as well as a brand new, modern foodstore.

Delivered by developers Dransfield Properties Ltd the company has relocated to the impressive new store at Low Stanners which has given Morrisons more space to for its Market Street format as well as better car parking facilities and close links with the town centre.

The 50,000 sq ft store, with a sales area of 25,750, employs 250 people - after the company recruited a further 83 members of staff as well as relocating its existing team.

The new layout is designed to reflect Morrison’s focus on traditional skills such as butchers, bakers and fishmongers.

The building has also been designed with high quality architecture and public realm as well as linking the town centre to the store with walkways and attractive ballustrades. An impressive column fountain has also been installed on this important gateway site in the town.

Store general manager Keith Nicholson, said: "The layout is fantastic with much more space than the old store and the open plan counters mean that shoppers will know that a lot of the food they are buying is made from scratch in the store."

Keith was joined by some of the company’s longest serving members of staff to officially open the new store and welcome the first customers at the official opening at 9am on Monday July 22nd.

Work started on the development in Autumn 2012 – the overall scheme also involved relocating a number of local businesses including the veterinary practice Robson and Prescott who moved last year to brand new purpose built premises at Whoral Bank in Morpeth.

Mark Dransfield, Managing Director of Dransfield Properties said: "The new store looks fantastic and we are delighted to see it open and trading this morning. Our team has worked on this project for the last four years and it is always very rewarding for everyone involved to see the store completed.

"We have always strongly believed that this is the right location for a food store in the town, keeping retail activity close to the town centre. The store has been designed with strong links to the town centre and the additional long stay car parking is also going to make a huge difference.

"Though this marks the culmination of our major works in the town we look forward to carrying on our work with other stakeholders and groups to continue to promote Morpeth."
