New Comrades Club Opens at Sanderson Arcade

15 April 2010

Members at Morpeth's Comrades Club have toasted the start of a new era after relocating to new premises at the town's Sanderson Arcade development.

Dransfield Properties Ltd have relocated the club to their new state of the art first floor premises above the Edwardian style arcade - with an access off the town's Market Place.

The move has given the club brand new premises and also paves the way for the second phase of the town centre development on the site of the old Comrades Club. And this week members had the chance to sample their first pint in  the new club.

Dransfield Properties Managing Director Mark Dransfield said: "This opening marks the start of the second part of our works to complete Sanderson Arcade. Relocating the club into their new premises was always the priority and everyone seems delighted with how it looks - everyone who has worked on the development should be congratulated."

The club has been based in the town since 1920. It was originally opened to give ex-servicemen from the First World War somewhere to socialise. Since then the membership has changed and grown and it is hoped the new premises will encourage even more members to join.

With an outside roof garden, lift and the entrance off the Market Place the new premises give the Comrades Club much more flexible space – and scope to attract new members. The new club also houses a function room and lounge as well as a games and bar area with full size snooker tables.

Club Chairman Dennis Wheadons said: "This is a major step forward for us to have these fantastic new premises and being right on the Market Place is great - we hope to be able to attract many new members. I want to thank Dransfields and everyone involved in delivering the new club for us here at Sanderson Arcade.”

The work took 12 weeks to complete and the project was designed by South Yorkshire based AC Liani and fitted out by Tavern Developments. The work on the new club has cost £600,000 to complete.

Work is due to begin on the next phase of the Sanderson Arcade development next month and the three major high street retailers taking space in the development will be announced later in the Spring.
