New food store plans to bring 290 new jobs to Houghton Regis!
24 March 2010
New plans are being unveiled this week for a £12 million food store development on land close to Houghton Regis town centre which will bring 290 new jobs to the area.
Everyone living in the area is invited to an open public consultation session where visuals and plans for the proposed 53,050 sq ft Morrison’s store can be viewed.
As well as the new food store the exciting new scheme proposed for the development site between Queen Street and the High Street will also house 287 car parking spaces.
The store has been purpose designed for Houghton Regis using natural materials and will have two entrances – one from the car park and the other looking out towards the town centre, linking in with other shops and services.
With close pedestrian links to the town centre the new development has been designed to cater for shoppers who are currently travelling out of the area to do their main food shopping.
This week’s public consultation session is the first step in the planning process and feedback gathered at the event will be reflected in the plans which are expected to be submitted by the end of April.
The scheme is being brought forward by the award winning Yorkshire-based developers Dransfield Properties Ltd. The company is also working with local bus operators to ensure the development is fully accessible and consulting with local businesses.
Managing Director of Dransfield Properties Ltd, Mark Dransfield, said: “Our architects have looked at the existing buildings in the town and designed a scheme which really compliments and links in with the High Street.
“We have worked closely with Morrison’s on a number of developments in other parts of the country. We hope everyone who is interested in finding out more about the development will come to the consultation session and give us their views on the proposals.”
A piece of public art by the renowned sculptor Robert Erskine is also being commissioned as part of the town centre development. Mr Erskine has worked with Dransfield Properties on a number of schemes.
The open consultation session will be held on Thursday March 25th between 11am and 6pm at The Council Chamber on Peel Street in Houghton Regis.
