Multi-Million Pound Health Centre Is Officially Opened

The £4.5 million pounds Tunstall Primary Care Centre has officially opened.

Stoke-on-Trent’s Lord Mayor Cllr Terry Follows and Stoke-on-Trent South MP Joan Wally cut the ribbon with Staffordshire Cluster of PCT’s Chief Executive Graham Urwin to mark the occasion.

Dr Bose and Dr Sonnathi whose practices both moved into the centre which opened its doors to the public in September attended the official opening, with NHS staff from both practices, patients, as well as representatives from the developers Dransfield and the Architects Dixon Dawson.

Work began on the centre in Scotia Road last November and it now forms part of the second phase of the town’s successful Alexandra Park development. The first phase of the Alexandra Park development was completed two years ago and houses various retail outlets and a gym. 

As well as the brand new two storey Primary Care Centre there is also a new Boots Pharmacy, as well as:

·         GP practices – Dr Bose and Dr Sonnathi (with a patient list of approximately 5,000 patients).

·         Dental Access Centre.

·         District Nursing, Health Visiting, School Nursing, and Specialist Nursing.

·         Paediatric Physiotherapy, Speech Therapy, and Podiatry.

·         Dietetics, Continence Services, and Orthoptics.

·         Blood testing.

There ‘s also parking for 241 cars, as well as landscaped grounds and a courtyard garden for patients and visitors with pedestrian and cycle access to the city’s Greenway Network.

Staffordshire Cluster of PCT’s Chief Executive Graham Urwin welcomed everyone to the official opening. He said: “I am really pleased that Tunstall Primary Care Centre is now open as each year we expect approximately 70,000 patients to access the services that are now delivered in a modern health care purpose built facility. “

Andrew Malley, Retail Property Director for Dransfield Properties Ltd, said: “We met last year at the topping out ceremony and we had great expectations of creating a development fit for the 21^st century and I think we have exceeded that by working with the NHS. I would like to thank NHS Stoke on Trent for their leadership and vision whilst working with us on this project and wish everyone working here all the very best in the future.”

Stoke-on-Trent South MP Joan Walley added: “There is so much goodwill here by the Primary Care Trust, staff who work here, GPs, clinicians and dentists to do the very best for constituents. I want to thank Graham for making it possible for me to be here today. Tunstall Primary Care Centre hasn’t come about by accident – this has been made to happen and we should celebrate what has been achieved here and what we’ve got today.

She added: “But nothing stops here – we have to look to the next step and keep improving health. It’s fantastic to see the city’s Acting Director of Public Health Dr Zafar Iqbal here today and what I want to see happening In the future is even more health promotion and health prevention in place. Today has been a fantastic day and to all those who work here I want to say enjoy it – you are really are our local heroes.”

Stoke-on-Trent Lord Mayor Cllr Terry Follows said: “To see this NHS building and the others that have been built across the city like Meir and Cobridge is absolutely fantastic and will help serve the health needs of the city’s population tremendously. It is my pleasure to declare Tunstall Primary Care Centre open.”
