Major Works Underway This Week on Morpeth’s New Supermarket
9 January 2012
The contractors Tolent are back to work after the Christmas break this week on the site of Morpeth’s new Morrisons supermarket.
The team are starting work on the major earthworks on the site as well as the Cotting Burn diversions and also continuing with the site clearance works which started in December.
The bus link widening on Stanley Terrace has already been completed and Tolent have co-ordinated their roadworks programme with utility works taking place in Morpeth so a one way system is being put in place for six weeks starting from January 16th.
Traffic coming into town will be diverted along Bridge Street to Newgate Street and Manchester Street and local traders, businesses and taxi companies have been contacted about the work.
The new Morrison’s store will have a sales area of 25,000 sq ft and will incorporate Morrison’s unique Market Street fresh food counters including butchers, bakers and fishmongers. Staff at the existing store will transfer to the new store when it opens and new local job opportunities will be created in this attractive town centre location.
The main building works are scheduled to be completed by November 2012 with Morrison’s then fitting out the store ready for an opening in the Spring of 2013.
Work is also progressing well on the site of the new Veterinary Centre at Whorral Bank in Morpeth. The practice, Robson and Prescott, currently based at Low Stanners, being relocated as part of the overall development.
Amanda Holmes, Head of Communications for Dransfield Properties, said: “Work is progressing well on both sites and the steelwork has now been erected at Worral Bank so you can see the new Veterinary Practice really starting to take shape now.
“On the supermarket site we had quite a large section of fencing that came down during the recent high winds and I’d like to thank the many members of the public who contacted us about this to ensure we could make the area safe as soon as possible.”
