Marshall’s Yard is celebrating the successful launch of its newest arrival, Waterstones, which opened on Saturday to a great welcome from customers.
The brand‑new 5,123 sq. ft. bookshop welcomed a strong turnout of shoppers throughout its first day. The ribbon was officially cut by the Chairman of West Lindsey District Council, Cllr Matt Boles, who welcomed the much loved bookseller to the town.
Cllr Boles said: “It’s fantastic to see Waterstones open here at Marshall’s Yard. This is a wonderful addition for Gainsborough, and I’m delighted to welcome a brand that supports reading, creativity and community spirit. I wish the team every success in their new store.”
The opening also delighted younger visitors thanks to a special appearance from the Gruffalo, who greeted families as shoppers explored the new store for the first time.
Waterstones joins a strong mix of national and independent retailers at Marshall’s Yard, including M&S Simply Food, Next, JYSK, Vision Express, Costa Coffee and Holland & Barrett, alongside a vibrant line‑up of independent businesses.
Waterstones Gainsborough Bookshop Manager, Russell Thomas said: “We are so excited to be opening a beautiful new Waterstones shop in Gainsborough. As well as an extensive selection of fiction, non-fiction and children’s books, we have a wonderful range of games, puzzles, gifts and vinyl. Our team of passionate, dedicated booksellers pride themselves on being at the heart of the community, and we can’t wait to introduce readers to their new favourite read, whatever their taste.”
As well as further strengthening the centre’s offer the new store has also creating around new jobs in Gainsborough.
Founded in 1982, Waterstones now operates more than 317 shops across the UK, Ireland and Europe, and is known for its curated ranges, knowledgeable booksellers and engaging author events.
The launch marks another key moment for Marshall’s Yard as it continues to evolve ahead of its 20th anniversary year in 2027. Since its transformation from the former tractor works site in 2007, the centre has earned national recognition for heritage‑led regeneration and continues to attract strong new brands.
Centre Manager at Marshall’s Yard Melissa Clement said: “We are delighted to welcome Waterstones to Marshall’s Yard. It’s such a lovely addition for our local families and shoppers, bringing something special to the centre. The opening day had a wonderful atmosphere, and it’s fantastic to see so many people enjoying the new store already.”
