Work is progressing well on the brand new £7 million retail development in Morpeth, Northumberland.

Creating up to 100 new jobs in the town, the site which was previously home to the former Morrisons store is undergoing a major redevelopment to create three brand new retail units which will be occupied by the popular national retailers Next, Pets at Home and Home Bargains.

With the foundations now in place, the main contractors, Tolent have started on the main structural steelwork for the three main retail units. Masonry works had been hindered by the recent early morning frosts however the welcome spring weather has now allowed for the roofing and glazing works to the kiosk to progress well and should be completed just in time for the Easter weekend.

Recent road closures have allowed the contractors to establish the new sewer and drainage connections to the three units and the kiosk with the new water supply connections now well underway.

As well as redeveloping the former Morrisons site, significant improvements to the layout and location of the disabled and parent parking spaces are planned as well as the creation of a brand new glazed canopy which will run along the car park’s central walkway.

The SA Taxis office is also being relocated to a brand new purpose built pod in the car park and the popular Morpeth Larder is being extended and remodelled to provide more internal space and an attractive new alfresco dining area.

Head of Communications at Dransfield Properties, Amanda Holmes, said: “It is great to see the works progressing so well on site. We anticipated that the recent wet weather may affect the completion however we are pleased to say that we are still on target for summer 2016 completion”.

The new town centre scheme is being delivered by the award winning Sanderson Arcade developer, Dransfield Properties Ltd.

The north east construction company Tolent has been awarded the contact to deliver the new development – the company also built the new Morrisons store which opened in the town just over two years ago.
