Morpeth’s Sanderson Arcade shopping centre has been shortlisted for a prestigious national retail marketing award for its role in the re-launch of Morpeth Market.
The new market was launched in October last year alongside the town’s first ever Food and Drink Festival – Star of the BBC’s Apprentice, Adam Corbally joined traders and civic dignitaries for a packed day of events which included cooking demonstrations and tastings.
The unique partnership approach to improve the town’s market brought the team at the Arcade together with Morpeth Town Council and Northumberland County Council as well as other stakeholders in the town.
New market stalls and branding as well as anchor points and a local marketing campaign were introduced as part of the public-private partnership initiative.
As well as investing in the markets Sanderson Arcade also gives management time to help with the running and promoting of the weekly market and monthly Farmers' Market. Sanderson Arcade is owned and managed by Dransfield Properties.
The centre has now been shortlisted in the Purple Apple Awards organised by the British Council for Shopping Centres for its role in the re-launch - working with other stakeholders in Morpeth to upgrade and promote the weekly market and Monthly Farmers’ Market.
Sanderson Arcade Centre Manager Medi Parry, said: “Its fantastic news that the work the team at the Arcade has put into re-launching the market and promoting it in the region has been recognised in this way – everyone involved is delighted to be short-listed.
“This initiative is something we have been really excited to be involved with. Retail is all about the experience and theatre and having a great local market is hugely important to a thriving town centre.”
Councillor Ian Swithenbank, policy board member responsible for markets at Northumberland County Council said: “This shortlisting is great news. We are always looking for new ways to improve and enhance what markets have to offer our local communities and the council has been pleased to invest in this partnership in Morpeth.”
The winners of the Purple Apple Marketing Awards will be announced at an awards evening in London on May 8th.
Morpeth Market is managed by Northumberland County Council and Sanderson Arcade, working in partnership with Morpeth Town Council, Morpeth Chamber of Trade and other local organisations through the Morpeth market working group.
