Gute Fahrt! Yorkshire cyclists gear up for tour of Germany
26 August 2015
A team of charity cyclists from the Barnsley based firm Dransfield Properties Ltd are gearing up for their latest charity challenge – cycling from Munich to the German capital of Berlin.
The team of 16 riders are taking part in the ninth leg of an annual charity ride and will be covering 431 miles in just five days cycling across Germany in their efforts to raise more than £50,000 for charity. Since starting their challenge in 2007 they’ve covered more than 2,680 miles.
The team, nicknamed the MAMILS will start their challenge on 9th September in Munich, Southern Germany where last year’s ride finished. They’ll arrive five days later in the German capital where the ride will end on Sunday September 13th.
This year the team will once again be joined by the pro-cyclist and World Championship Silver Medallist, Tony Gibb who heads up the new Full Gas Bikes concept opening at Dransfield Properties’ Fox Valley development which is due to open in Spring 2016.
The South Yorkshire riders will be joined by team members from Lincolnshire, Hull, Merseyside and London.
The MAMILS have completed a leg of the Tour of Europe since the ride was founded in 2007. That year they cycled from London to Paris starting at Tower Bridge – they’re aiming to be back at the same point by 2020.
Over the last eight years the team has covered more than 2,680 miles and raised £336,000 for charity. When they complete their challenge they’re hoping to have raised a total of £500,000 through their marathon fundraising efforts which by then will have spanned 13 years.
Managing Director of Dransfield Properties, Mark Dransfield, said: “The punctures, falls, bumps and near misses are too many to keep count. Each year we each get a little older but we don’t seem to get any wiser as we keep adding to the climbs or the miles to make the challenge even harder.
“Last year we had the Austrian Alps to contend with and this year will be the longest ride so far in terms of the mileage we’re going to be covering. We’re all looking forward to getting started and raising as much money as possible for the charities we are supporting.”
The team have once again chosen to support Action Against Cancer, Leukemia and Lymphoma Research and The Dransfield Foundation – a Trust established to help support local causes and community projects and initiatives which will be suggested by each member of the team.
The money donated to LLR will help support the Trial Acceleration Programme and at Action Against Cancer it is helping to support the ground breaking research programme headed up by Professor Justin Stebbings in London.
The research focusses on developing new diagnostics and treatments to improve the survival prospects and the quality of life for millions of cancer sufferers worldwide.
