Former Red Bull Bar Gives Town Centre Venue a New Lease of Life!

Former Red Bull Bar Gives Town Centre Venue a New Lease of Life!
26 January 2012
The impressive wooden bar from the Red Bull in Morpeth has pub crawled a few yards across the road to a new home at the town’s Masonic Centre.
The pub building itself is due to be demolished later this year as part of the new Morrison’s supermarket development on the Low Stanners site where it currently sits – but the bar will live on in the new venue just a short walk from the pub.
After hearing about the development plans Neil Fraser, from the Morpeth Masonic Centre at Winton House, got in touch with Dransfield Properties to see if the bar could be recycled and kept in a new location in the town.
Winton House is just across the road from the Low Stanners site on Dark Lane and hosts dozens of functions every year including parties and weddings, but the venue has never had a proper bar installed – until now.
The team at Tolent, who are the main contractors on the Morrison’ssite, helped in the move and the bar is now in pride of place in its new location. The Red Bull building is currently being used as a site office for the new development.
Neil Fraser of the Morpeth Masonic Centre, said: “We are delighted with the new bar, its fantastic, our old bar was homemade so to have this lovely new bar is just wonderful. Our members are thrilled as we simply couldn’t afford to replace our old falling down bar prior to this kind offer.
“We hold a lot of functions at Winton House, including charity events and weddings. It really does make a big difference to us having a proper bar and we are really grateful to both Dransfield Properties and Tolents for helping us out with this.”
The news has been welcomed by Morpeth couple Louise and George Davison who are celebrating 30 years of marriage this year after first meeting at the Red Bull Pub where Louise worked.
When Neil, an amateur wood turned, heard Louise’s story and that she wanted a piece of memorabilia such as a brick, and decided to turn her a nice wooden pen as a memoir instead.
Louise said: “It is great to know that the bar is being saved, its part of our courting history so we are really please to know it is still in Morpeth. They’ve even made us a wooden pen from a piece of the bar which is lovely of them.”
Amanda Holmes, from Dransfield Properties, said: “It is great news that the Red Bull bar is being kept in the town and put to good use, we are delighted to be able to help out with this project.”
Work started in November last year on the Low Stanners site. The brand new Morrison’s store will have a sales area of 25,000sq ft and will incorporate Morrison’s unique Market Street fresh food counters including butchers, bakers and fishmongers.
The main building works are scheduled to be completed by November this year with Morrison’s then fitting out the store ready for opening in the Spring of 2013.
