Easier access for local beauty spot

26 October 2011

Access to one of the area’s most attractive natural beauty spots has been improved with funding from Kirklees Council’s Environment Grant scheme and the cooperation of private landowners.

A partnership approach has been led by the Environmental Alliance working with the local authority and landowners including Dransfield Properties - the developers of the Morrisons store in Meltham.

Beth Allcock from Environmental Alliance said, “the work to create a viewing point at Folly Dolly Falls near to Meltham has been something which locals and others have wished to see for a long time. When the land where the Falls are located came under different ownership a permissive agreement to allow public access was made with the new owner and the owner of the Meltham Greenway.”

The project has been co-ordinated by Environmental Alliance as part of the wider Greenstreams Project, which is improving the rivers and streams around the Huddersfield area. “There is much to see along our rivers with lots of wildlife and many attractive views,” said Beth. “The trouble is it’s not always easy to find your way there although with the support of Dransfield Properties and other landowners things are now much better than they were a few years ago.”

The improvements at Folly Dolly Falls included the creation of a viewing point over the Falls and the building of steps down a steep and slippery slope to get to the bottom. The Falls are located just to the north of the Meltham Greenway and can be accessed from there about 300 metres from the Meltham-Huddersfield Road.

As well as a local beauty spot the Falls are also a locally important geological feature. The West Yorkshire Geology Trust and the Friends of the Meltham Greenway are soon to erect an information board on the Greenway explaining the geology of the Falls.

Mark Dransfield, Managing Director of Dransfield Properties Ltd, said: “We’re delighted to have played our part in improving the access to what is a well known local beauty spot.”
