Cyclists Raise Thousands for Yorkshire Charities!
30 September 2008
A team of 12 cyclists from two Yorkshire firms have raised more than £35,000 for charity after taking part in the latest leg of their ambitious fundraising challenge.
The riders from Barnsley based Dransfield Properties Ltd and Hull’s PDR Construction pedalled the hilly 335 mile route between Paris and Lyon over four days in June this year.
And their efforts have raised an impressive £36,658.28 for Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity and Leukaemia Research which has now been presented to the two charities – making a donation of £18,329.14 to each charity.
Last year the team rode from London to Paris in the first leg of their tour and next year they’re planning a route from Lyon to Marseille with the long term aim of eventually working their way across Europe.
Despite rain, aching limbs and saddle sores the 12 Yorkshire riders managed to complete the gruelling French course in just four days travelling an average of 80 miles a day.
The challenge was organised by brothers Mark and Paul Dransfield who both fielded teams from their companies to take part in the event.
Mark is Managing Director of Dransfield Properties Ltd, the urban regeneration specialists based in Barnsley.
He said: “It was a really tough challenge, much harder than we’d anticipated but we’re pleased we made it and really pleased with all the support we’ve had to raise such a great amount of money.”
Paul Dransfield, said: “We’d like to thank everyone who has supported us and got the money in to enable us to make this donation which is a fantastic amount for both charities.”
The team are now looking forward to planning their route for the 2009 leg of their charity challenge from Lyon to Marseille.
Senior Fundraiser at Sheffield Children's Hospital Simon Athey said "It's fantastic to receive such great support, I can only imagine how tough this challenge was, but it was certainly worth it! the whopping total the cyclists achieved is incredible, on behalf of our young patients I would like to pass on my thanks to all guys involved Well done!!"
