Councillors give go ahead for £3.5 million investment for St Andrew’s Retail Park, Hessle Road, Hull

7 April 2006

Hull City Council has approved proposals for a £3.5 million extension of St Andrew’s Retail Park on Hessle Road in Hull by Dransfield Properties Limited, the company behind the original scheme which was completed in 2001.

The new proposals will deliver an additional 28,250 sq ft of new retail space and home and garden store Wilkinson has already signed up for a 24,000 sq ft unit, which will create around 75 jobs.

Phase one  of the retail park transformed a run down row of Victorian shops into a thriving retail centre. It created over 200 jobs for the local community and national retailers Peacocks, Choices, Brantano, Greggs, Poundstretcher, Home Bargains, Select, Grattans and Jack Fulton currently occupy the units.

Phase two will be built on land currently occupied by three companies: The Sewing Machine Centre, which has been trading for eight years and is the only specialist of it’s kind in the town, will move from 393 to 381 Hessle Road in Summer 2006, after it has been fully refurbished by Dransfield Properties; plastics manufacturer Roplas will relocate it’s Hessle Road operation to new premises on Freightliner Road; and Imperial Antiques will relocate to alternative premises.

St Andrew’s Retail Park changed the fortunes of Hessle Road which had suffered heavily from the decline of the fishing industry and the subsequent migration of the local population. After becoming run down and under used, the development brought shoppers back to the area, providing a much needed boost to the local economy.

James Howson, Development Surveyor for Dransfield Properties, said “We are delighted with Hull City Council’s decision. St Andrew’s Retail Park has revived the fortunes of Hessle Road and we look forward to further enhancing this part of the town.”

Dransfield Properties sold phase one of the development in 2004.
