Stroud named as Britain’s best place to live by the Sunday Times

26 March 2021

Stroud has been named the best place to live in Britain in 2021 by the Sunday Times, topping a list of 78 locations around the country in the newspaper’s annual round-up, which assesses locations on a range of factors including transport, green spaces, broadband, the high street, schools and culture.

The town, which has an average house price of £265,000 and average rents of £700 pcm, was praised for having “one of the best" farmers' markets in the country, with its stalls selling local bread, meat, cheese and organic vegetables. It was also chosen for its restored canal, the walks available on Rodborough, Minchinhampton and Selsley commons, and its creative arts scene.

Dransfield Properties, the owners of Five Valleys Shopping Centre in Stroud’s town centre have invested over £17m in the town over the past two years, since acquiring the former run-down Merrywalks centre.

The team behind Five Valleys have integrated into the independent spirit into the town through every step of the regeneration project, from opening a large, indoor market filled with local, artisan traders, to signing up key local and independent businesses to join the scheme including Sandersons Boutique Department Store which is due to open on April 14th.

Later in the year Dransfield Properties will start on site constructing a new medical centre, merging two local GP practices and bringing other additional health services to the conveniently located building right in the town centre.

Managing Director of Dransfield Properties, Mark Dransfield said: “It comes as no surprise that Stroud has been named as the best place to live in Britain, it’s community spirit, stunning green spaces, good transport links and wide range of businesses make this town unique and a truly fantastic place to live and work.

“We have thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the community here in Stroud over the past few years and we are looking forward to continuing our investment in the town for years to come”.
