A special soil cutting ceremony will held on Friday (December 12th) to celebrate the start of work on a new £5 million retail development in east Hull.

The East Hull MP Karl Turner will be among the guests attending to mark the start of the long awaited project which will transform a run-down site in a key location in the city.

The new £5 million development is on a 1.8 acre site on the corner of Mount Pleasant and Holderness Road and is being delivered by Barnsley based company Dransfield Properties.

The plans were unanimously approved by Hull City Council in April this year and the local firm Geo Houlton and Sons Ltd moved onto site last month to start work on the project which is scheduled for completion in June 2015.

The scheme will be anchored by a 25,000 sq. ft. B&M store with a garden centre, four further new retail units will also be created. Two empty shops fronting Holderness Road are being refurbished and brought back into use as part of the overall project.

As well as bringing an attractive new retail development to this part of Holderness Road the scheme includes a new district centre car park with around 90 parking spaces.

The contractors, developers and other local partners will take part in the ceremony on Friday which will take place on site at 12.30pm.

Dransfield Properties has delivered several well received developments in Hull including The St Andrews Retail Park on Hessle Road and The Mount, which neighbours the new retail development and was awarded an RICS Pro-Yorkshire Award soon after opening in 2003.

Hull City Council Leader, Councillor Stephen Brady said: “I welcome this further investment in East Hull by Dransfield Group who have a strong track record of successful regeneration in the area. I want to particularly thank Mark Dransfield who, with his team, have worked tirelessly with our regeneration team over a number of years to bring this development to fruition.

"With the significant investment in Green Port by Siemens and ABP, the planned investment by RB for the multi-million pound Centre for Scientific Excellence, the KREATE learning and enterprise centre and continued housing regeneration including the development of 4,000 new homes equalling a private investment in excess of £5m, wholly demonstrate that our city is certainly heading in the right direction.

"The combined investments in the community help to demonstrate further real confidence in the area’s future and will no doubt create a number of job opportunities for our local community.”

Managing Director of Dransfield Properties Mark Dransfield, said: “We have been working towards bringing a scheme forward on this site for many years and there has been a great deal of support in the area to see further development in this part of east Hull.

"We have been worked closely with Hull City Council on this project and are delighted to have the local authorities’ support in helping to get our plans for the area to this point – everyone involved with the development is now looking forward to seeing the new stores completed and ready for opening next summer.”
