22 March 2021

Demolition work is now underway on the site of Huddersfield’s new Aldi store which is due to be developed on a former mill site on New Hey Road.

The discount supermarket chain was granted planning permission for the new store to serve the local community in December 2019.

The development will transform the former Oakes Mill site on New Hey Road with a brand-new and attractive Aldi store covering 19,214 sq. ft.

There will also be 114 car parking spaces and around 40 new jobs will be created once the store opens.

When the demolition work has been completed by Yorkshire based  Metropolitan Demolition  the main contractors can move on to site to start work on building the new store. This phase of work is expected to start in the Autumn ready for a Summer 2022 opening.

A spokesperson for Aldi said: “We are delighted to be making such good progress on preparing the site for the main construction work to begin in the Autumn.

“This is another step closer to delivering our new store for the local community in this part of Huddersfield. We look forward to serving our customers with the great range of goods and products that Aldi is well known for and giving shoppers more choice in the local area.”

The team from South Yorkshire based Dransfield Properties Ltd have worked on the plans with Aldi’s property team – once completed it will be the 26th Aldi delivered by the development company since it was founded in 1992.

Aldi is Britain’s fifth largest supermarket with over 900 stores and more than 36,000 employees.
