An annual fun run in memory of Penistone brothers Jack and Paul Sykes takes place this weekend, and the team at Sandersons Department Store at Fox Valley are supporting the special fundraising event.

The annual 2km run starts at Penistone Show Ground at 10:30am on Sunday June 9th covering footpaths and trails around the town.

The event is organised to raise much needed funds for the Heads Together (Barnsley) Charitable Trust – set up in Jack and Paul’s memory.

Sandersons Department Store has supported the annual fun run every year since it was founded and is once again sponsoring the colourful medals that each runner receives after completing the race.

It’s the 7th year running that Jack and Paul’s Mum Claire Throssell has organised the event in the town. This year also marks the 10th anniversary of the boys losing their lives  - Jack and Paul were just 12 and 9 when their lives were tragically cut short in a house fire started by their father.

Television presenter Christine Talbot will be joining Claire at the Fun Run to award the medals and start the race, and Claire is determined to make the event a fitting and colourful tribute to her boys.

She said: “It is just fantastic the support I have had from the local community and local businesses, it means such a lot to be able to organise the Fun Run again this year, in memory of Jack and Paul and we’re really hoping for a great turn out on the day.

“We’re really grateful for the ongoing support we have for the event – and would like to thank the team from Sandersons and all the local businesses who have helped so much.”

Nicole Burgin, head of e-commerce at Sandersons, said: “We are delighted to be able to sponsor the medals for this fantastic community event in memory of two very special boys.

“Claire’s determination to fundraise and campaign is absolutely amazing and we are pleased to be able to support the Fun Run again for 2024. We wish all the runners and fundraisers the very best with the event.”

More than 200 people usually take part in the run raising vital funds that assist families in need of respite care and specialist equipment.
