Roundabout Sculpture Captures Gainsborough's Past and Present
10 September 2007
The Thorndike roundabout on the outskirts of Gainsborough has been given a new lease of life thanks to a topiary sculpted traction engine that reflects the town’s famous agricultural machinery producing past.
As part of its continuing commitment to the local community as well as its commitment to the regeneration of the town, Dransfield Properties Ltd is sponsoring the roundabout for the next year. This includes landscaping the roundabout and installing a showpiece traction engine.
Following consultation with Lincolnshire County Council and Gainsborough Town Council, the Barnsley based property development company forged ahead with the project that is due to be completed by the end of the month
Cathy Conway, the company’s PR and marketing manager, said:
“We hope very much that the residents of Gainsborough and visitors to the town will enjoy this new feature. The topiary traction engine is an excellent replica of the working model. It is a wonderfully creative way to reflect Gainsborough’s rich agricultural history and to provide a distinctive gateway to the town.
“Dransfield Properties is once again pleased and proud to be supporting the town and helping to look after its interests.”
Paul Leeder, clerk to Gainsborough Town Council, which has assumed responsibility of the Thorndike Roundabout from Lincolnshire County Council and will now look after its maintenance, said:
“It is really good news that this project is now nearing completion. We are delighted that the roundabout has been given a face lift and the traction engine is a fantastic feature.”
