25 June 2008
Construction company Mansell has been awarded the contract to build Morpeth’s brand new £32 million Sanderson’s Arcade.
Work is due to get underway on July 21st on the prestigious new development which is being brought forward by Morpeth II, the joint venture company of Yorkshire based Dransfield Properties and Ethel Austin Properties Ltd.
Mansell’s North East business unit team is looking forward to starting on site to deliver the development, which will transform a run down shopping centre into a landmark Edwardian style shopping mall.
Marks and Spencer will be the anchor tenant on the development, with New Look, 02 and Starbucks also among those who have already signed up to join the growing list of retailers due to open for business on the new development in the North East market town. Local businesses Healthi Choice and The Jewelers Guild are also opening stores in the new arcade.
Sanderson Arcade will house 85,000 sq ft of purpose built retail space within an elegantly designed arcade as well as a landscaped piazza area and an extension to the existing Morrisons store. The plans also include a brand new bus interchange, 17,000 sq ft of office space and further car parking.
Mark Dransfield, Managing Director of Dransfield Properties said: “We are pleased to be announcing Mansell as the contractors for our development in Morpeth and looking forward to getting on site and delivering this scheme which we know has been long awaited in the town.
“We have already had a great deal of interest in the scheme and as well as those retailers who are already signed up we are in talks with other major national companies who are keen to have a presence in Morpeth.
“People will start to see more activity on site over the next few weeks as preparations for construction work get underway.”
Bill Aitchison, Regional Managing Director for Mansell in the North East, said: “The team here at Mansell is delighted to be working on this development for Dransfield Properties and Ethel Austin Properties Ltd. We are all looking forward to getting to site to begin work on the delivery of Sanderson Arcade, which we know will provide a tremendous addition to the centre of Morpeth.”
The rear car park at the back of the Comrades Club will be closed from Monday July 7th as the contractors prepare to start work on the scheme later in the month.
