New zero waste store opens for business at Market Cross

7 May 2020

The independent zero waste store Refill-It has opened its doors at Selby’s Market Cross today with a range of packaging free foods and household goods.

Local businesswoman Emma Gregory has launched the new venture which is born out of her passion to offer a zero waste and environmentally friendly service to her customers.

The store can be found opposite Home Bargains at Market Cross and has been launched with social distancing measures in place for the safety of customers.

Despite many temporary retail closures due to the coronavirus pandemic, Emma has received lots of local interest in her commitment to providing a sustainable shopping experience.

Shoppers are invited to bring their own old containers to swap for one of the stores and fill up a range of products including pasta, beans, rice, and pulses. Refill cleaning products are also available as well as shampoo and conditioner – minimising the use of single use plastic.

Refill-It also stocks a range of products which are kinder to the environment including bamboo toothbrushes.

Emma said: “We want to get rid of the plastic and packaging so that our shoppers really are only paying for the products.

“We’re obviously being extra cautious at the moment and are asking people to bring old jars or containers for cleaning and take one of ours so that we can ensure everything is cleaned and sanitised.

“We’ve had lots of lovely feedback already about the shop, is a strange time to open up a new retail venture but there are a lot of people who want to make more sustainable choices in the way they shop and we’re here to provide that service.”

Emma is working in the shop with her husband Richard helping where he can. The store will be open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 9:30am-5:30pm.

Estates Surveyor at Dransfield Properties, Alisdair Gillespie, said: “We are delighted to be welcoming a new local business to Market Cross, the store looks great and we and would like to wish Emma all the very best with the venture.”
