Wilkinson expands on to Marshalls Yard

9 January 2006

Home and garden store Wilkinson is to increase its presence in Gainsborough, by taking a 29,790 sq ft unit on the Marshalls Yard development, the largest unit on the scheme.

The present Silver Street store, which has been trading since 1996, has been acquired by Marshalls Yard developers, who will let the store to an alternative retailer when the new Wilkinson store is open and trading.

Wilkinson is the latest major national retailer to take space on the £37 million development.  Leading fashion chain New Look  signed up at the end of last year, joining Carphone Warehouse, Greggs, Allied Carpets, Brantano, Specsavers, JJB Health and Fitness and regional hair salon Stringers.

The main construction phase of Marshalls Yard began this week, with contractors Tolent moving on site.  Developed by Yorkshire-based companies Dransfield Properties and Prospect Estates, on an eight acre landmark site at the edge of the town centre, it will create around 1,250 new jobs, and transform the old Britannia Works into an attractive mixed-use scheme.

Mark Dransfield, Managing Director of Dransfield Properties, said: "We are delighted that Wilkinsons have taken the biggest unit on the scheme.  They are a huge footfall generator and their ability to sell their full project range will help draw even more visitors into Gainsborough.  Their commitment is further proof of the confidence in Gainsborough's changing fortunes."

Sarah Froggatt, Communications Manager for Wilkinson added: "We're really looking forward to the new development. We believe it will be a great opportunity for us to offer our customers the very best shopping environment and by relocating to a bigger store we can offer even better value and even more low priced everyday items for all the family."

Nottinghamshire-based Wilkinson has launched a planned expansion programme and aims to have 370 stores across the country by the year 2010.

But as well as opening new stores across England and Wales, Wilkinson is also keen to offer its current and new customers even better value by re-locating some of their smaller stores into larger buildings where available.

"The new store in Gainsborough will be substantially bigger than the present one which will enable us to offer a bigger range of products and create extra job opportunities, but at this stage we cannot give an exact number," added Sarah.

"In the meantime, Wilkinson's current store in Gainsborough will continue to offer a great deal for local people - with even more value in store for the future!"

The Wilkinsons store currently serves around 500,000 customers each year.
