Pets at Home Expands with new store in Morpeth

Pets at Home, is investing in a new store opening in Morpeth on Friday 12 August, providing a welcome boost to the local economy. Pet lovers in Morpeth will see a Vets4Pets practice and a Groom Room open inside the store.

Located on Stanley Terrace, the new, 9,000 sq ft store has created 21 jobs for local people, including the creation of new grooming and veterinary positions, having received more than 300 applications.

All colleagues at the new store receive extensive training on pet care and pet knowledge which is endorsed by City & Guilds, providing a stamp of approval that demonstrates the value of its training.

Local pet owners will also see a Vets4Pets practice open in the store, owned by Frances Gray. They will be ensuring that Morpeth pets are kept healthy and happy by treating them in the new, fully equipped surgery, which will house an operating theatre, digital X-ray facilities, in-house laboratory and a hospital ward providing a wide range of treatments from health checks to emergency operations.

Area manager, Andrea Bruce, said: “There was a strong demand from Morpeth pet owners for Pets at Home to come to town, and we’re very pleased to have been able to grant them their wish.

“Pets at Home is committed to recruiting from the local area and I’m pleased we’ve found a team of talented individuals in Morpeth. They’re all extremely passionate about pets and can’t wait to get started.”

Applicants go through a number of stages to assess their compatibility for the role. Those recruited are given the option to gain specialist qualifications in pet care during their career with Pets at Home.

Store manager, Neil Brooks, has been with Pets at Home for 16 years, having previously worked at the Sunderland branch.

Neil, said: “It’s been a busy few months and now my team and I can’t wait to open the doors and welcome our new customers and their pets to the store.”

Pets at Home Morpeth will provide thousands of dedicated pet products, catering for local dogs, cats, small animals, chickens, birds and fish as well as wildlife.

The store will also have an adoption centre, run by independent charity, Support Adoption For Pets. Since being established in 2006, the charity has helped over 1,000 rehoming centres and animal welfare organisations across the UK by awarding grants and running fundraising campaigns with Pets at Home.

Founded in 1991, Pets at Home has more than 425 sites across the UK employing more than 6,000 people and is proud to have won The Sunday Times Top 25 Best Big Companies to Work For 2013. 

The new store is part of the £7 million redevelopment of the former Morrisons store in Morpeth delivered by Dransfield Properties Ltd, the company also owns and manages Sanderson Arcade in Morpeth. As well as Pets at Home the new development will also deliver a Home Bargains store (opening August 27th) and Next which is due to open in October.
