Volunteers roll up their sleeves for Barnabas Centre makeover

12 July 2016

A major makeover gets underway this week thanks to Morpeth’s Sanderson Arcade helping to transform an outdated and under-used gym room into a bright new community media centre in the town.

The team at Sanderson Arcade have raised £6,000 for Barnabas Safe and Sound to fund the makeover which will create a new media hub at Barnabas Stobhill Centre.

The charity was selected as the Arcade’s chosen charity throughout 2015 and staff have organised a number of events including a spinathon and a Bush Tucker Trial to help raise funds. Centre manager Medi Parry also took part in the Great North Run last year and the Tree of Light at Sanderson Arcade, led by Rhona Dunn at the Rotary

Club raised £1,000 for the project throughout November and December last year.
To make the money they’ve raised go that little bit further they’ve put out a call to the business community in Morpeth to help out with the transformation.

The work will bring new life to a little used and out dated former gym room at the centre and give a brand new facility to the local community in Stobhill.

Brightly coloured sofas and shelving will be installed and there will be access to mobile tablets to help with research and homework. There will also be a state of the art projector and interactive screen.

It’s hoped that the new media room will be completed and ready to be used by the beginning of August.
The makeover team moved in this week and the room has been cleared out ready for the serious work of transforming the space to get underway.

As well as the team from Sanderson Arcade other companies who are pitching in to support the project include:
• Tolent Construction
• C & W Builders
• PRESS Electrical
• Castle Carpets
• Caretech Systems
• Jewsons
• Howdens Joinery

The team at Sanderson Arcade are also taking part in volunteer sessions to help get the work completed.

Centre manager at Sanderson Arcade Medi Parry said: “We have been fundraising over the last year to support this project and planning it for many months so it is fantastic to get to this stage and see the work finally getting started on the transformation.

“This is going to be a fantastic resource for the local community and we’re extremely grateful to everyone who has helped us with fundraising as well as all those fantastic local companies who are giving their time to complete the project. We’ll be helping out and volunteering and we can’t wait to see the finished project.”

Hayley Brown Manager of Barnabas Safe and Sound said: “"It is a really exciting time for Barnabas at the Stobhill Centre, last month we opened our brand new Community Gym, and this month we have the development of a media suite which will bring a fantastic new resource for the community in Stobhill.  We really appreciate all the fundraising and hard work that everyone has put into this project and we can't wait to see the end result"
