Arcade greets ten millionth customer with a special surprise

22 July 2014

Shopper Nadine Andrews got more than she bargained for when she popped to Sanderson Arcade in Morpeth at the weekend.

Nadine, who is originally from Cramlington but now lives in Birmingham, was visiting family at the weekend when she was approached by staff at the centre to be told she was the 10,000,000 person to walk through the doors since the Arcade opened in November 2009.

She was treated to a beautiful bouquet of flowers and a delicious hamper from the Corbridge Larder to mark the milestone at the award winning centre.

Nadine told staff she was delighted to be named the 10 millionth customer and though she now lives in Birmingham her favourite shop at the Arcade is JoJo Maman Bebe, adding “This is a lovely surprise and couldn’t have happened on a better day.”

The first shoppers walked through the Arcade’s entrance November 2009 when Joanna Lumley OBE declared the centre open – by the following June the footfall counters had hit the million mark.

Since then the Arcade has grown and expanded with a second phase being completed in Spring 2011, visitor numbers have grown over that time with footfall counters at both entrances to the centre monitoring visitor number since the opening.

This last six months have seen an increase of almost 20 per cent in the footfall at the centre compared to the same period last year. The management team at Sanderson Arcade say recent initiatives such as free parking and improvements to the markets in the town have had a positive impact on visitor numbers.

The town centre development is owned and managed by Barnsley based Dransfield Properties Ltd and has won a number of national awards in the last four years.

The centre is anchored by Marks & Spencer with other retailers including Monsoon, Hobbs, Laura Ashley and the Corbridge Larder. The latest store to join the line-up is Gareth James Chocolatier, an independent north east company which has just opened a new chocolate shop and café lounge.

Medi Parry said: “It’s a great milestone for us to welcome our 10 millionth visitor to the centre, Nadine certainly seemed surprised when we approached her – we had been carefully monitoring the numbers on the footfall counter all last week and knew we would hit the magic number some time during Saturday.

"We have definitely seen footfall grow this year and the introduction of free parking in the town centre has certainly been a factor. Expanding our range of restaurants and cafés over the last couple of years has also made the centre a more attractive place to visit and spend time."
