Morpeth's budding businesses set their stall out for Young Enterprise Challenge

14 November 2013

Move over Lord Sugar – Morpeth’s answer to The Apprentice takes place later this month when the town’s budding business brains will stage their own Christmas Market.

Students from King Edwards VI School in the town have been bidding for one of the 20 stalls which are available at the special Youth Trader Market due to take place in the town on November 30th.

And members of the successful youth companies with the most original business plans have been to visit the town’s new Wednesday market to see how the professionals do it ahead of their own big day.

The initiative has been a collaboratively organised venture between the team at Sanderson Arcade and Morpeth market working with The King Edwards V1 School, Morpeth.

Students were asked to draw up their business ideas to bid for a chance to trade at the market on Saturday November 30th from 10am to 3pm.

The stalls will have a great array of gifts, made or sourced by the young entrepreneurs – ranging from chocolate and cupcakes to jewellery, textiles, crafts and cards.

And Apprentice 2012 star Adam Corbally, who officially launched the new Morpeth Market in October, will be making a return trip to the town to help judge the businesses and decide which is the most successful and original business idea.

Adam will be joined by the owner of The Corbridge Larder Dave Robinson who knows exactly what it takes to run a successful business.

Centre Manager at Sanderson Arcade, Medi Parry, said: “The students have come up with some fantastic ideas and they are now working on marketing their businesses in the run up to the Christmas Market event itself on November 30th.

“We hope everyone in Morpeth will really get behind this and come and support our budding young entrepreneurs and see what they are capable of.”

The winning team will be awarded £300 to put back into their businesses, and all the groups will have a chance to chat to Adam and get some first-hand business advice.

Victoria Najafi, Student Voice, Leadership & Enrichment Co-ordinator at King Edwards VI School, said: “The students who have been successful in obtaining a market stall have done extremely well, as the quality of business plans was of such a high standard, and we are particularly pleased that the competition has attracted students from a wide range of year groups.

“The students are especially excited to meet Adam Corbally from The Apprentice. We warmly invite the public to visit the students' stalls, as not only have they worked tremendously hard on their products, but this will also be a great opportunity to purchase a Christmas gift or two!"

The Youth Trader Christmas Market takes place on Saturday November 30th from 10am to 3pm at Morpeth Market Place.
