Plans approved for a new community pool at Fox Valley in Stocksbridge

26 July 2013

Plans for a new community pool at the Fox Valley development in Stocksbridge have been approved by Sheffield City Council.

The new pool will be part of the £42 million retail, office and leisure development being delivered on the site of the former Outokumpu steel factory, neighbouring the TATA Speciality Steel plant in the town.

Stocksbridge Regeneration Company, a subsidiary of Dransfield Properties Ltd, submitted an application to bring forward a new pool and gym as part of the scheme – and those plans have now been approved by the city council.

The new four lane pool will be housed in a 12,500 sq ft unit in a prime position on the Fox Valley development with good links to the rest of the town.  It has been designed to be DDA compliant and will have a state of the art changing area and viewing gallery.

A hydraulic floor will be installed so the pool can be lowered for lane swimming but raised for toddler groups and lessons. An 11,000 sq ft gym is also planned for the first floor.

Stocksbridge Regeneration Company's development team worked to the recommendations outlined in a report by Sport England, released earlier this year which identified that a four lane pool was the correct sized facility for the town.

Amanda Holmes, Head of Communications for Dransfield Properties, said: “We are delighted that the planning application for the new pool at Fox Valley has been approved by Sheffield City Council.

“This is an important step forward in our plans to work in partnership towards delivering a community pool in the town in what we are confident is a great location.”

The company will now continue its work with 4SLC as well as the City Council and potential operators of the pool.

Fox Valley will be anchored by a 63,000 sq ft Tesco. Brand new office space is also planned, bringing a new commercial heart to the town, the development will have a central car park for 635 cars with good public transport links. A later phase will also deliver family housing.

The Stocksbridge Regeneration Company is working with the European Union to deliver the Fox Valley project with funding being sought through the European Regional Development Fund as part of the support for the region's economic development through the Yorkshire and Humber ERDF Programme 2007-13.
