The deputy Lord Mayor of Stoke on Trent Cllr Majid Khan has officially marked the start of work on the third phase of a Tunstall retail development after cutting the first soil on site.

He was joined by other councillors, stakeholders and the team from the developers Dransfield Properties Ltd to celebrate the start of construction work which will deliver five new retail units at Alexandra Park.

The Nottingham based firm J. Tomlinson moved onto site last week as the main contractors on the project and work will be completed by December this year.

The frozen food retailer Iceland is the first retailer to announce they’re signed up to take space in one of the five new units being built. The company is taking a 6,135 sq. ft. unit at Alexandra Park, creating 20 new jobs in the town.

Cutting the first soil on the development Cllr Khan said: “We would like to congratulate Dransfield Properties on their success in bringing this project forward. The jobs which will be created are very welcome and we wish all the businesses which come here every success.

“With Mandate for Change we can see things starting to improve and this is another piece of good news in the area, creating the right atmosphere for developers to come into Stoke and invest in our city.

“We can see from the work that Dransfield Properties has done over many years in Tunstall that it has brought new life to this area providing services and jobs for local people.”

The Alexandra Park development is built around a central 240 space car park with good links to the town centre and is also home to the impressive Shard sculpture as well as a DW Sports Fitness gym and store, Carphone Warehouse and a hair and beauty salon.

As well as the new Iceland store Dransfield Properties has several other national retailers interested in the remaining units which will sit alongside a Boots Pharmacy and Primary Care Centre which both opened in September 2011 in the second phase of the scheme. The new units now under construction cover a total of 25,400 sq. ft.

Head of Communications at Dransfield Properties, Amanda Holmes said: “We are delighted to be starting work on this final phase of our Alexandra Park development and look forward to the completion of the development later this year.

“The development and has been designed to complement the existing businesses and services we have here at Alexandra Park. We have already had a good deal of interest in the development and we look forward to making further announcements over the coming weeks.”
