Plans submitted for new Aldi store in Slaithwaite

29 May 2013

Plans have been submitted to Kirklees Council for a new 12,100 sq ft Aldi foodstore which is poised to regenerate a former mill site in Slaithwaite, near Huddersfield and help retain trade in the area.

The proposals are for a disused mill site off Britannia Road in Slaithwaite,  currently owned by Spectrum Yarns.

The new development will not only deliver a new town centre foodstore to serve the local catchment it will also create and secure jobs in the area.

The new store will create 30 new jobs in the town and also includes 90 car parking spaces.

An open public consultation event was held earlier this year by the developers Dransfield Properties Ltd, the company’s professional team used the feedback received at the event to shape the application which was submitted to planners earlier this month.

Comments from the public focused on highways and design and the team at Dransfield Properties have looked again at these aspects of the scheme before submitting their application.

On the recommendation of English Heritage the company’s architects have designed a modern building using a combination of natural stone and corten steel.

The plans also answer concerns about the loss of on street car parking for businesses on Britannia Road and will create a more pedestrian friendly environment – encouraging linked trips between the new Aldi store and other shops and facilities in Slaithwaite.

Retail Property Director at Dransfield Properties Ltd, Andrew Malley, said: “We are delighted to be working with ALDI on this project.

“We have made a number of changes through the consultation process and are confident that the application we have now submitted will retain shoppers in the area and answer the need for a food store to serve the local catchment. Our proposals will also bring a disused site back into use.”

Aldi is one of the world’s largest privately owned companies. The company opened its first stores in the UK in 1990 and currently operates over 500 stores across the country.

Dransfield Properties is based in Barnsley, South Yorkshire and specialises in town centre developments as well as stand along foods stores.
