Duchess Officially Opens Edwardian Tea Rooms at Sanderson Arcade!

5 November 2012

The Duchess of Northumberland took time out to visit Sanderson Arcade last week to give the centre's latest venture a right royal launch!

The Duchess was invited to officially open the Curiously Wicked Edwardian Tea Rooms which is already attracting visitors from right across the region.

The team at Curiously Wicked has spent the last three months transforming a 1,450 sq ft unit above their shop into a unique Downton Abbey style experience. Everything from photographs to decorations, fittings, furniture and even recipes are right out of the pages of the Edwardian history books and on Friday the team welcomed the Duchess to their official opening.

The opening coincided with Curiously Wicked’s first birthday at the Arcade – the company opened its chocolate shop last November after building up a strong following for their delicious handmade chocolates at farmers’ markets and fairs across the North East.

Staff at the family run team rooms aim to create a little bit of Edwardian theatre with morning coffee, afternoon tea and indulgent lunches served by staff in authentic Edwardian costumes, passing on the latest bit of gossip about Lord and Lady Cuwick and creating the feel of a period drama.

The family firm, run by Krystyna Dodds,  has taken on 16 new members of staff  - the chef David Hall has cooked for Royalty in the past has been researching recipes to serve up a little slice of history in Morpeth.

Her Grace the Duchess of Northumberland said: “I'm delighted to be sharing this special day with everyone at such an exciting new venture in Morpeth. Its great to see a business like this really take off. To have something like this in Northumberland is wonderful."

Krystyna, owner at Curiously Wicked, said: “The last twelve months have been incredible and it was fantastic to mark our first birthday and official opening with a visit from the Duchess.

"We are really creating a little bit of theatre and aiming to give our customers a real experience that they can’t get anywhere else and the feedback so far has been fantastic."

Centre Manager at Sanderson Arcade, Medi Parry, said: “The Edwardian tea rooms look fantastic, it’s just like stepping back in time and really brings something different to the Arcade.

“The company first opened as a Christmas pop up shop last November here at the Arcade and to see the company expand and grow like this is great – we wish them all the very best with their new venture.”
