McDonalds gets the green light at Lime Square!

30 July 2012

Manchester City Council's Planning Committee unanimously approved the planning application last Friday to build a two storey McDonalds restaurant and Drive-Thru at Openshaw’s Lime Square development. The restaurant forms part of the next phase of construction, due to start early Autumn, which will also include a further three retail units adding to the existing line up of other big brand names at the centre.

Built with an eco-friendly design, the 5,239sq ft restaurant is part of a new UK concept for McDonalds. The restaurant will create at least 60 full and part-time jobs within the East Manchester area. McDonald's is looking to build a new generation of restaurants in the UK and expects 2.500 jobs to be created in 2012 as part of their growth strategy.

Delivered by Yorkshire based retail property developers Dransfield Properties, the company has worked in partnership with Manchester City Council and New East Manchester to bring a new District Centre to the area.

Councillor John Longsden of Manchester City Council said: “The next phase of development at Lime Square is fantastic news for East Manchester, creating new jobs and training opportunities for local residents. Adding new retail space will also provide more reasons to visit Openshaw and this is just the kick-start that was needed to allow us to get the rest of the District Centre completed."

Retail Property Director of Dransfield Properties Andrew Malley also added: “We are delighted to be welcoming McDonald’s and are excited to see the commencement of Phase 3 and look forward to the new retail stores opening.”

The first phase of Lime Square opened in November 2010 saw the building of a new 80,000sq ft Morrison’s store as part of the strategic regeneration of this part of East Manchester. Phase Two of the development delivered eight new retail units and has generated 500 new jobs in the area.
