New Penistone Market Building Officially Opened!

22 July 2011

Penistone's impressive new market building has been officially opened in a special civic ceremony held in the town.

The market is the largest oak framed building in the country and was completed last year as part of the £15 million town centre regeneration project delivered by Dransfield Properties Ltd, working with local stakeholders including Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council.

Earlier this year it received the Best Community Project Award from South Yorkshire and Humber LABC Building Excellence and will now be judged in the national awards alongside other winning projects from across the country. The market was designed by Chesterfield based architects WCEC.

As well as the new market the town centre development has delivered a brand new Tesco store, town centre car park and new fire and ambulance stations - relocated to brand new premises at Springvale in the town.

The new Tesco store opened nearly 12 months ago but this week Penistone Town Council and BMBC celebrated the official opening of the new market building during the town's popular weekly Thursday market.

Dransfield Properties is now working on the final phase of the development  with a retail and office development on the land fronting St Mary's Street and the access road to the new Tesco store. The scheme has also been designed by WCEC to fit in with the architecture of the town including the new market building.

Development Surveyor for Dransfield Properties, David Hale, said: "The new market is a really impressive building and it is great to see it in use.

We are now looking forward to delivering the final phase of the work in Penistone town centre and creating an attractive development which will build on  what has already been achieved in the town."
