New footpaths plans announced as part of Stocksbridge regeneration scheme!

27 June 2011

A new multi user Public Right of Way along the valley bottom in Stocksbridge, North Sheffield is being introduced as part of a major mixed use development in the town.

The route will be a full Public Right of Way and will create a brand new, safe corridor for cyclists, horse-riders and walkers alongside the river  – with the potential to link in with existing footpaths including the Trans Pennine Trail.

The new footpaths are being proposed as part of the development by South Yorkshire based Dransfield Properties Ltd.

Work is due to get started on the company’s £46 million scheme next year and it’s estimated that on completion the development will create around 900 new jobs in the town.

It will also transform the redundant industrial land off Manchester Road in Stocksbridge creating a well designed mixed use scheme bringing a new supermarket, other retail units and modern office space. A later phase will also deliver 140 new houses.

Plans have also been approved for a new Test House and warehouse for Tata Steel in  Stocksbridge – the company neighbours the development site.

As part of the master plan for the site an existing Public Right of Way is being diverting by 60m.

A previous application to stop up and divert Ford Lane was made in 2009, however Dransfield Properties will be making a new application as plans have progressed on the housing element of the scheme allowing a more comprehensive right of way plan to be submitted.

The proposed new route will create 1029 metres of new Public Rights of Way linking and upgrading existing footpaths and creating an attractive riverside walk area. This will provide the missing link with the Steel Valley Walk.

The plans are being delivered in consultation with stakeholder groups including the British Horse Society and the Ramblers Association as well as Sheffield City Council’s Public Rights of Way team.

Retail Property Director for Dransfield Properties Ltd, Andrew Malley said: “Much of this area is rough industrial land at the moment but it is possible to see what can be achieved for walkers, horse-riders and cyclists as part of our overall development in Stocksbridge.

“Through the consultation process it is clear that people would like to see a safe flat access along the valley bottom in Stocksbridge that they do not have to share with lorries or other vehicles as they have in the past but is a prescribed walkway in a safe secure area.

"The new route will take users through the new development and alongside the river into beautiful woodland areas that aren’t presently easily accessible; a separate bridleway is also being created for horse riders.”
