New Year Facelift Underway for Selby's Market Cross

6 January 2011

Work is underway on a brand new entrance feature to the Market Cross Shopping Centre at Selby, in North Yorkshire in a project supported by the local authority, Selby Heritage Partnership Scheme and English Heritage.

The tired Gowthorpe entrance to the town centre shopping development is to be completely transformed and replaced with a stylish and traditional Magnesium limestone fascia being supplied by the same company used by Selby Abbey in their restoration projects.

The concept for the attractive new frontage has been created together with Selby District Council’s design team and with the backing of English Heritage who have also provided grant aid towards the £55,000 improvements.

The new frontage has been designed to complement the recent Selby Renaissance Project improvements in the town centre.

Alexander Two and Cartridge Point, who trade from the two units either side of the entrance walkway, will also have brand new traditional hardwood shop fronts as part of the facelift.

Listed building consent has been granted and the new investment represents the latest phase in a programme of improvements at Market Cross by the owners Dransfield Properties Ltd.

New shop fronts have also been installed at a number of other units at the centre throughout last year. The shopping centre has also seen new tenants Lemon and Lime as well as Ladbrokes join the line up during 2010 and other tenants have renewed their long term leases.

Development Surveyor at Dransfield Properties, David Hale, said: “We have been working on a number of improvements at Market Cross throughout 2010 and that work will continue this year starting with this fantastic new entrance feature which is going to make a big difference to the appearance of the main entrance to Market Cross.

“We wanted to ensure the new frontage fitted in with the works already completed at Gowthorpe and everyone is looking forward to seeing the finished product.”

Selby company H Jackson Shopfitting & Joinery started at the weekend on the new frontage and it is scheduled to be completed by the end of the month.
