Dransfield Cyclists Complete Their Charity Challenge !
Yorkshire's very own team of MAMILS - Middle Aged Men in Lycra - have completed their impressive 326 mile challenge cycling from Marseille in France to Portofino in Italy.
And the 20-strong team are now on target to raise £60,000 for their three chosen charities which are Leukaemia Research, the Children's Hospital in Sheffield and The Children's Foundation.
The team is fielded by Barnsley based Dransfield Properties Ltd and PDR from Hull. Mark Dransfield, MD of Dransfield Properties, launched the fundraising bike ride four years ago in 2007 when the team cycled from London to Paris.
The following year the team picked up the route in Paris and pedalled to Lyon, in 2009 it was Lyon to Marseille, and last week the cyclists met in Marseille to cycle to Portofino and complete this year's leg of the tour. They are now planning next year's route with the long term aim of getting back to London Bridge by 2020.
Already the cycle ride has raised £131,000 for charity and it's hoped this year's ride will have raised £60,000 - taking the total over four years to nearly £200,000.
At the Children's Hospital in Sheffield the money will be spent on the refurbishment of The Ryegate House Therapy Block. The cycle ride is also raising money to fund research projects undertaken by Leukaemia Research as well funding a piece of equipment for The Children's Foundation in the North East.
Managing Director of Dransfield Properties, at Tankersley in Barnsley, Mark Dransfield, said: “It has been a really hard route this year, we have piled on the pressure adding to the mileage each year and there were some tough climbs. But the whole team did really well and it was a proud moment when we cycled into Portofino.
"We're all middle aged blokes and the age of the team ranges from late 30's to early 60s and everyone is delighted to have completed the challenge."
