Topping Out Ceremony at new development in Openshaw !

20 March 2010

A topping out ceremony has taken place to celebrate the completion of the steelwork at the exciting new retail development at Openshaw, east Manchester.

An 80,000 sq ft Morrisons supermarket taking shape on the 11.5 acre site is the first phase of the £40 million development being brought forward by South Yorkshire based Dransfield Properties Ltd.

And to mark the topping out a flag was dropped from the top of the structure by Dransfield Properties' Managing Director Mark Dransfield as well as the local MP Tony Lloyd and local councillors.

The ceremony was an opportunity for local residents and members of community groups to be updated on the development site and to be involved in the progress of the scheme.

Mr Dransfield said: "Despite the harsh winter we have had the development is on target and we are delighted with the progress, it's great to see the steelwork up on site here after the many years of work to bring this development to fruition."

Work started in November on this first phase which will bring a new 80,000 sq ft Morrisons store and 670 car parking spaces - the new store is on schedule to open in Autumn this year.

The ambitious scheme will eventually house a further 76,550 sq ft of additional retail space and a new health and fitness centre. Up to 750 new jobs will be created.

Eddie Smith, Chief Executive of New East Manchester, said: “The topping out of the superstore marks another milestone for Openshaw . This development, when all phases are complete, will create a much needed new commercial heart to the area and add to the other new amenities and developments that local people are benefiting from.

"New shops, homes, a health centre and community facilities are helping make Openshaw a more attractive, family-focused neighbourhood which will benefit existing residents and encourage more people to choose to move to the area.”

The company is working with the nearby St Clements Primary School with a competition to find a name for the development which is taking shape on their doorstep.
