Fit-out work starts at Tunstall’s new health and fitness centre!

7 September 2009

Work has started this month on the £3 million state of the art fit out of the brand new DW Sports Fitness Club at Tunstall, Stoke on Trent.

Part of the prestigious Alexandra Park development, which was completed earlier this year by Dransfield Properties, the fitness centre will be the country’s first newly fitted out club under the DW Sports Fitness brand.

DW Sports Fitness bought 53 Fitness Clubs with retail stores from JJB Sports in a deal announced earlier this year which included the 45,000 sq ft club at Tunstall which had just been built.

The building has been designed to have a gym on the lower ground floor with a sports store at car park level.

Carphone Warehouse are already trading well at the Alexandra Park development and plans have also been submitted to Stoke City Council for the next phase of the development which will include a new health centre merging three GP practices in the town.

As well as a beautifully lit swimming pool the new DW Sports Fitness Club will also have a luxurious hot spa and steam room spa, an air conditioned gym - kitted out with cutting edge fitness equipment - and a spacious group exercise areas.

Mel Crossland from DW Sport and Fitness said: “We have plans for a very different layout to any of our other clubs to include a functional training area. The look and feel of the club will show the ‘one sporting destination’ in keeping with our Mantra!”

The DW store is due to open in November with a full opening of the sports and fitness club early in the New Year creating around 40 new jobs in the area – the final opening dates are still to be confirmed but the company plans to be open for viewings from November 19th.

Retail Property Director at Dransfield Properties, Andrew Malley, said: “ Work starting on the fit out of the DW Sports unit is another important milestone in the development and we look forward to the fantastic new fitness centre opening. This is a significant investment in the area and shows the confidence that exists in Tunstall as a thriving town

“We are also working on the next phase of the Alexandra Park development which will bring further  jobs and investment to the area as well as delivering a brand new NHS facility in the town.”

Alexandra Park attracted widespread publicity earlier this year when the piece of art by award winning sculptor Robert Erskine known as The Shard was put in place as a centre piece to the development.
