Government approval for Stocksbridge Regeneration Scheme

Government approval for Stocksbridge Regeneration Scheme

14 August 2009

Government officials have approved the plans for an exciting £46 million mixed use development in Stocksbridge, Sheffield.

The scheme was approved by Sheffield City Council in June this year, but in line with all retail developments on this scale it had to also be reviewed by the Government Office for Yorkshire and the Humber.

Government Office have now confirmed the application does not need to be referred to the Secretary of State, therefore a planning certificate can be issued so the development can go ahead.

The development will bring a new supermarket to the former Outokumpu steelworks site off Manchester Road in Stocksbridge as well as brand new retail and office space and car parking – creating up to 900 new jobs.

The £46 million development is being delivered by Barnsley based developers Dransfield Properties Ltd working with Gallaghers UK. The development team and architects from Chesterfield based WCEC have worked closely with the Sheffield Urban Design Review Panel to reflect the architecture and industrial heritage of the site.

The new scheme will include:·                  ·

  • A 63,000 sq ft foodstore
  • Further retail units of varied sized
  • Café and restaurant units
  • Office space suitable for local businesses
  • Car parking - 635 customer spaces
  • Comprehensive landscaping
  • Pedestrian linkages with Manchester Road

Amanda Holmes, spokeswoman for Dransfield Properties said: "We are delighted to have this confirmation from Government Office which gives the development the green light.

"This is a major investment in the town which will bring new shops and facilities into the area. The next stage is to set up a steering group to work towards delivering the scheme and we would hope to be on site by 2010/2011."
