Sheffield Pupil's Visit Tunstall's New Sculpture

21 January 2009

Pupils from Ashdell School in Sheffield had the chance to meet the famous artist Robert Erskine during a school visit to Stoke on Trent.

The 27 girls watched the brand new sculpture by the internationally renowned artist being officially dedicated at Tunstall's Alexandra Park retail development which has been brought forward by South Yorkshire developers Dransfield Properties.

Called The Shard the sculpture has taken six months to complete and measures 30ft by 30ft, it weighs around 7 tonnes. It depicts an ancient fingerprint found on a Shard of pottery and has been designed to celebrate the history of the area.

It has been funded by the South Yorkshire developers as part of a £24 million phased scheme which is on-going in Stoke-on-Trent.

The Ashdell pupils had the chance to chat to the sculptor who has also agreed to visit the school later this year and judge an art competition.

After visiting Tunstall the pupils went on to the Wedgwood factory in nearby Barlaston where they watched the famous Jasperware being made.

Headteacher Anne Camm said: "It was a great trip and all the girls really enjoyed the day. Hopefully it has inspired them to come up with their own works of art for Robert to judge."
