Government officials have given their backing to plans to extend the Swift Caravans manufacturing facility in Cottingham and create a new roundabout access to the site on the Beverly Bypass.

East Riding Council approved the plans earlier this year, but due to the size of the development it had to be referred to Government Office for Yorkshire and Humber, which has now confirmed it does not have any objections.

The additional space created at Swift will allow the company to consolidate its manufacturing operations from three sites on to one and the new roundabout access will significantly reduce commercial traffic levels on local roads around the Cottingham area.

Industrial land on Dunswell Lane vacated by Swift more than a year ago will now be transformed into a leafy housing estate by Persimmon Homes, with natural water features throughout, and public space for use by the whole community.

Extensive work has been undertaken to ensure the development site can cope with flooding – the area was badly hit last year and additional gulleys and culverts will be created to ensure adequate underground drainage. The site has also undergone detailed ground investigation works as it is located to the acquifer which supplies drinking water to homes throughout the Hulll area.

Swift Holdings (UK) Limited and the Boundary Business Park development consortium have brought forward the development.

Peter Smith, Swift Group chairman, said: “We are delighted with the decision. We can now further streamline our operations which will ensure we are able to remain competitive and retain our position as one of the Europe’s leading suppliers of caravans and motor homes.

“The new roundabout will remove commercial traffic from the streets of Cottingham and we will continue to work closely with the local community to ensure the Swift expansion only brings a positive effect to the area.”
