Public to choose Penistone art

Public to choose Penistone art

16 May 2007

Penistone residents are being asked to choose the design of a public art feature which will sit at the heart of the Penistone markets regeneration scheme.

Two designs have been commissioned from Yorkshire metalwork sculptor Johnny White for an art installation which would be located on a retaining wall between the town centre car park and the new access road which is being delivered as part of the redevelopment.

Developers Dransfield Properties will fund the cost of the artwork, estimated to be around £10,000, and want members of the public to vote for their favourite design.

 Option One

Scene and Herd – designed to celebrate Penistone’s rich agricultural heritage, and mark the location of the old cattle market, Scene and Herd features four fresians placed along the wall, each getting progressively smaller, with the actual finished piece having cows of different designs.

Option Two

Vine and Dandy – influenced by Penistone’s market town character, and a source of fresh produce, Vine and Dandy features a ’biologically diverse’ vine bearing an array of fresh fruit, vegetables and flowers.

Both designs will be made out of coloured stainless steel, and hand polished, formed and fabricated.

Johnny White has created some of the county’s most original public art features including the shiny stainless steel bees and honeycomb on the pedestrian access to the Co-op at Dodworth and the large metal spider on the wall of Sheffield manufacturing company, Gripple.

Residents should contact Jackie Helliwell at Dransfield Properties with their views on the two designs by the end of June either by post to Dransfield Properties, Wentworth House, Tankersley S75 3DP or email Jackie.helliwell@dransfield.co.uk.

Joe Moran, Development Surveyor for Dransfield Properties, said: “The local community has been heavily involved with the Penistone regeneration plans, and we want this to continue with a public vote for a feature which will create a locally distinctive sense of place.””
