Full steam ahead for Whitefield redevelopment

13 March 2007

The £20 million redevelopment of Whitefield district centre in Bury, Greater Manchester can press ahead, after an application to demolish a listed public house on the site was approved.

The scheme will deliver an 80,000 sq ft Morrison’s supermarket with 455 parking spaces, create 350 jobs and bring highway improvements.  The Church Inn needs to be demolished to allow Bury New Road to be widened which will deliver a vital link to the Bury Manchester Quality Bus Corridor, strengthening public transport within the area.

Bury Metropolitan Borough Council supported the application back in December  and now Government Office for the North West has confirmed that the Secretary of State will not intervene in the decision.

Over 30 property interests had to be acquired for the development and the demolition of commercial buildings and houses on the site has already been completed.  Work will now begin on demolishing ‘The Brand Centre’, a derelict supermarket on the site, with construction of the new store starting later this year.

The Dransfield Properties redevelopment will also deliver new premises for local restaurant Cafe Roma which is being relocated to make way for the development.

Mark Dransfield, Managing Director of Dransfield Properties, said:  “This redevelopment will underpin the whole district centre and bring a new vitality to the area and I am looking forward to starting work on the scheme this year. There has been a tremendous amount of support from the local community and I would like to thank everybody who was helped to get the development to this stage.”
