THE SEARCH IS ON FOR A NAME FOR GAINSBOROUGH'S NEW DEVELOPMENT!
The youngsters of Gainsborough have been invited to delve into the local history books and come up with ideas for a name for the town’s new £19 million retail development.
Demolition work is now well underway on the new retail park, being developed at the Britannia Works building in the town – and construction work starts in earnest this autumn.
This major regeneration project will breathe new life into these historic Grade two listed buildings with a sympathetic redevelopment – bringing this important site back into use after many years of neglect.
The development partnership of Dransfield Properties and Prospect Estates has now challenged the towns’ school children to suggest names for the retail park one it is completed next year.
The company has written to all seven primary schools in Gainsborough inviting the children to take part in the naming competition.
It’s hoped they will think about the local history of the area and the site and suggest names, which reflect that history.
Mark Dransfield, Managing Director of Dransfield Properties Ltd, said: “We want to hear the ideas that the children of Gainsborough have, this is a development which is going to change the face of the town centre and we are keen to find a name which reflects the rich local history and one which will stand the test of time.
“We have run competitions through schools in a number of other areas and both ourselves and the schools we have been involved with have found it extremely rewarding.
“We do understand that there is a great deal of public feeling in the town about the final name and we are now looking to the younger generation to help us with their ideas.”
The company is already marketing the site to national retailers who are keen to have a presence in the town.
Robert Mayo, Director of Business Development at Prospect Estates, said: “This is an important development on an important site in Gainsborough and we are very much looking forward to hearing the ideas that the children come up with for the final name the development will have.”
The development is the biggest retail scheme in Gainsborough in recent years and will create around 300 new jobs as well as providing a much greater choice for shoppers in the area and retaining trade in the town.
The former engineering works has been in need of re-development for a number of years.
Once it has been completed the new retail park will deliver 100,000 sq ft of brand new retail space in the town centre as well as a further 4,000 sq ft restaurant and 7,000 sq ft of office space.
Thirteen new retail units will be created in this prime shopping location as well as 305 new town centre car parking spaces. There are also plans for a new Heritage and Visitor Centre on the site.
